Hi, Susan. My grandparents came from a shtetel near Kiev which family oral history has handed down as "Skakalivka" - they came sometime before 1920 and settled in Buffalo, New York. Their names were Oscar Greenberg and Tillie (Tovah?) Barcun. Oscar's father's name was Label and his mother's name was Devorah. Tillie's father's ame was Harry and her mother's name was Sarah. It seems to me that the place they came from probably was Sokolivka. A lot of people from that shetel came to Buffalo because others from their village were already there. The name "Barcun" or "Bercun" was listed on a website as being a family name of Jewish immigrants to Buffalo from Sokolivka. My grandfather and grandmother spoke mostly Yiddish. My grandfather founded a business that produced Kosher soda, and the name of the business was "Oscar's Beverages" - locally known as pop, not soda! Don't know if any of this sounds the least familiar to you! Thanks for posting.
