All of the census records I've referenced are available here at Ancestry. You should use the spelling 'Papish' for the Pueblo location, as that tended to be standard spelling there. One hour to the north in Denver, it was 'Popish'. In Cleveland and Joliet, Ill. it was 'Papesh'. I think these spellings were standardized by publishers of early city directories, who did their best to spell it like it sounded.
If you are able to identify the place in Austria/Yugoslavia/Slovenia where Jerry was from, I'd be interested to know that. I suspect he was from the same area of Suha Krajina SE of Ljubljana that my Papez ancestors came from. There was an extreme amount of immigration from that area during the years from 1880 to WWI.
