My great-grandfather, Andrew Mike Grace came to the US as a young boy. The US Census records differ slightly in his info, but what I know of him is this: Andrew was born in 1885 (we think) in Slovakia and emigrated to the US approx 1889. He died in 1934 and throughout his adult life he was a saloon owner in Bridgeport, CT and flouted the liquor laws before and during Prohibition. He married Margaret Schmidt who was also born in Slovakia and came to the US as a young girl. I believe I have found her immigration records from 1892. However, Andrew is very difficult to find out any more info. I just received his death cert and now I have the name of his father, John Grace. His mother's name was unobtainable. I was hoping to discover the original spelling of the Grace surname, but at least I got a name for his father. I can't find Andrew in the 1900 US Census. but I found him in the succeeding ones until his death. I've searched the old Bridgeport city directories trying to find his father and the only John Grace who lived there from 1889-1905 was from Ireland. I've tried looking for different names, like Gres, Gris, Gresh, etc. I am not getting anywhere. I've tried searching on the Liberty Ellis Island website and I did find an Anna Gres with a young son named Andre who arrived here in 1884 from "Hungary." It is possible that this is my great-grandfather and his mother but I don't know where to go from here. Does anyone have any ideas on how to trace Andrew's family back in Slovakia? I reached out to the Bridgeport Historical Society but they couldn't find anything on him. I found some old newspaper articles about him but nothing that sheds any light on his Slovak roots. I have been searching NYC records trying to find John and Andrew before they (or just Andrew) settled in Bridgeport. Thank you for any help and suggestions.
