McDONALD, OH – Irene N. Szabo Arbie died of natural causes at the age of 96, on Aug. 28, 2012.

Born on May 1, 1916, in Primrose, Pa., (Washington County) to Shandor Szabo and Ethel Zagony, she lived all her life in the Niles, Ohio and McDonald, Ohio area.

Irene grew up on Pratt Street in Niles, Ohio and would take her father, Shandor, his lunch at the Niles Brickyard when she was only eight years old.
She had to drop out of Niles schools in 10th grade to care for her ailing mother, Ethel.

Upon marriage to Samuel Joseph Arbie on May 1, 1936, she moved to McDonald, where she was a homemaker and raised five children.

Irene was a resourceful mother, growing a garden, raising chickens and cooking, sewing and taking care of her children, who all graduated from McDonald schools. Her specialty was crocheting Afghans for all her children, grandchildren, and friends. Her best dish was Hungarian goulash and nut kolachi.

She was proud of her Hungarian heritage and her great-great-uncle, Major Charles Zagonyi, who fought heroically for the Union in the Civil War. She, like Will Rogers, never met a soul she did not like.

Irene’s five children survive her, Carmella DiGiacomo of Fowler, Patricia (Ron) Ondo of Austintown, Ohio, Salvatore Arbie of Weathersfield, Nancy (Meritt) Hughes of Ft. Pierce, Florida, and Judith Szabo-Lapore (Henry) of Youngstown, Ohio; her 16 grandchildren, Maria (Dave) Cesta, Noel DiGiacomo, Michael (Katrina) Schiavone, Jennifer Cox, David (Lauren) Schiavone, Phillip (Andrea) Arbie, Victoria (Brian) Downing, Kenneth Arbie, Elizabeth Arbie, Jean (Kevin) Kozel, Meredith (Bradley) Smith, Jeffrey Terlecki, Justin Terlecki, Sarah Terlecki, Jacob (Lisa) Terlecki, and Josh (Kristina) Terlecki, and; 22 great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death was her loving husband of 51 years, Sam, who died in Nov. of 1987; her five sisters, Helen, Wilma, Molly, Bertha and Margaret; and three brothers, Alex, William and Steve.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 1, 2012, Saturday, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in McDonald, OH.

Her family will receive family and friends from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday morning at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church.

Irene’s family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Briarfield at Ashley Circle and Hospice of the Valley for their care and compassion.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Valley in her name
