GCF Becker’s parents, HCF Becker and MMC Engelke, were actually married in Brockum (not Dielingen), on 20 November 1874. Both were widowed, and the bride was 15 years older than the groom; this was his second marriage and her third. Since she was heir to the family farm, at 83 Brockum, her husbands (including Becker) adopted her surname at marriage, as was the custom in this region, although the children often reverted to the father’s surname as adults.
Like your husband, I’m an Engelke descendant. The documented lineage extends back to the early 1600s.
