I am trying to research my Czech ancestors back into their homelands. I am stuck on a couple with the last name Bernklau or Berniklau. Here's what I know...

Lorenc (Lorenz, Lawrence, etc.) Bernklau
b: Jun 1840 (per 1900 census) in Bohemia
d: 25 May 1916 in Nebraska and is buried in Bohemian-Slavonian Cemetery in Wilber, Saline County, Nebraska. Gravestone says age 76, so perhaps Jun 1839 for birth.

married 1862 in Bohemia (per 1900 census) to:

Marie (Mary) Fictum (I believe her last name could also be spelled Fitztum)
b: 29 Jun 1838 in "Tyn Plzenskem, Bohemia"
d: 02 Sep 1911 in Nebraska. Buried with to her husband.

Circumstantial evidence suggests Marie was born in the village of Cermna, near Stankov. Margie Sobotka's famous book of Nebraska and Kansas Czech Settlers lists two other Fitztums--Matej and Jakub--born in "Cerma, Hors. Tyn., Plzen." From census records and gravestones I know that Matej and Jakub were the right age to be Marie's brothers. They all lived in the same county in Nebraska and are buried in the same cemetery. See Sobotka's listing here on page 37:,%20Kansas%20Czech%...

Regarding Lorenc, I found an unanswered message board post fromway back in 1998 where the author was researching the name Bernklau in "Lohowtschitz near Stankov." That must be the Germanic spelling of the village of Hlohovčice a few km from Stankov. I have no other connections than that.

Marie had 9 children, but only 4 still living in 1910. I only know of two of them--Mike and Annie. As far as I am aware, those were the only to appear on censuses in Nebraska. I have found no immigration records for anyone in the family, although from censuses we know Lorenc, Marie and those two children came over between 1878 and 1883. The records are inconsistent and sometimes contradictory, but all fall within that range. They may have come together or separately.

Any help finding the roots of this family would be great!
