I could sure use some help. I'm trying to find info on my husband's paternal great grandfather, David Bennis. According to my mother-in-law, he came over from Austria to NY sometime in the late 1800's to early 1900's. His name was changed at Ellis Island because the people there didn't know how to spell what he was pronouncing (and he couldn't read or write in English). It could possibly have been Benish or Benisch, but even my husband's deceased father never knew what David Bennis' original name was.
He was married (although I don't know his wife's name) with 4 children: 3 girls (Lee, Nettie and Rose) and 1 boy (Myer). The youngest child (Myer) was born in 1908 in Ohio. The only information I have on the girls are their first names and that they all ended up living in Ohio as well - generally the Toledo area.
I have checked the Ellis Island records and have come up with nothing. I've also checked the LDS Mormom site as well as Ancestry.com, and again - nothing. I can't even find an Ohio Death Certificate (where he ended up living).
Where do I go from here? I feel like it's just out of reach and I just need to know what direction to go from here.
Thanks in advance!
