Enumerators Marks on 1891 Mountain Ash Census

Could anyone throw light on why there maybe an X on the far right of the census sheet for Mountain Ash Oxford Street( and possibly elsewhere)

There is one next to my Great Great Grandmother, and looking through the census for that area it seems as if there is an X next to a handful of women. My Great Grandmother was illiterate, had an illegitimate child living in the house, and was possibly pregnant at the time as well. These are the only things as a lay person I could think may be the reason, but given the other Xs appear to be against women who are married I am doubtful it's the illegitimate reason, and obviously illiteracy wasn't confined just to women.

Has anyone come across this, or could explain? Also, does anyone know what a b written next to the occupation may mean on the 1891 census. The job is cordwainer.

Thanks very much.
