JAMES CRAIG & JEAN BALFOUR (and a few general questions)

I am researching a Craig family from Brechin.

There were two brothers (or at least they appear to be) named JAMES CRAIG (m. JEAN BALFOUR) and DAVID CRAIG (m. JEAN GORDON)

James died in Brechin and this comments on his death:
"Pre 1855 Gravestone Inscriptions in Angus; volume one; STRATHMORE",
published in 1979 for the Scottish Genealogy Society. In Brechin Cathedral
Kirk, page 34, #304, there is the following:
Jas Craig kirk officer here 39 y(ears) d(ied) 17.6.1849, 70, w(ife) Jean Balfour 26.10.1845 64
ss (sons) David & Geo d(ied) inf (fant)
noted: "See Edwards 'Guide' 3rd ed. page 163-4: he was a bell ringer.. an upright man---; a s(on) James, Abrdeen, was live in 1849).

Jean Balfour was apparently actually about 63y4m old when she died.

QUESTION: Is it more likely that the ages it gives in the record (that is, 70 and 64) or ages, or what year the person was in (as in, Jean was 63 years old, but was in her 64th year).

If he was the son of William and Margaret, he would have been 69y old when he died, and in his 70th year. If he was the son of John and Elizabeth, he would have been 71y old when he died, and in his 72nd year.

The biggest reason why I even consider that John and Elizabeth were James' (and David's) parents is that James had a daughter MARGARET WATSON CRAIG. Otherwise, almost no names in John and Elizabeth's family are present in James' or David's families, and John and Elizabeth did not have a son David that I have been able to find, while William and Margaret did. Many of the names in William and Margaret's family are present in James' and David's families.

Also, since it is MARGARET WATSON CRAIG and not ELIZABETH WATSON CRAIG, the Watson may be referring to someone else. Jean Balfour's mother, by the way, was not a Watson.

QUESTION: Do you think it is more likely that James and David's parents are William and Margaret, or John and Elizabeth.
