Hi Ben,
I'm afraid I cannot be of much help, but your grandfather would have been a contemporary of my own. The name seems to have originated in Westmeath and is found around there still, though like elswhere it is rare (not big breeders, the Whelehans) The original name in Irish is O'Faoileachaun (phonetically) and means approximatly "fond of fun, frolicksome" - in other words they were party animals. The word is related to the Irish word for butterfly which tells one something about the characteristic.
My grandfather's name was Peter and he lived in Broadstone, in Dublin, was married and had two children John Francis (my dad) and William (who was never married and had no children he would admit to) - more follows.
