Thanks for the info. It certainly seems peculiar - the Motens are proving troublesome due to the constant change in variation and spelling - as I'm sure you've found yourself!
All I can say is that my Grandmother, who grew up in Roscrea and held all the family history told me fairly limited information on this side of her ancestry, unfortunately she passed two years back so I can't check with anyone who'd know - i have attached a rough sketch she sketched out of the Moten line.
Perhaps I'm wrong with the Catherine connection - my grandmother didn't know who was his spouse - I only took the name Catherine due to the census records (see attached) they were the only household of suitable age, location and family name I could find.
I have been unable to find any corresponding evidence for 'James Moten and Eliza Letson' - but I was told this was where the unofficial double barrel started - I was under the impression that it was a descriptive surname more than anything else.
Don't know how much further we can go from here with such conflicting names - I have attached all the evidence I hold for "my" Moten line. It could also be the case that my grandmother was wrong with some of her first names (Johns, Jacks and James are very common!) - but I do think "my Motens" are linked to the "Moten Letsons" - of this i'm sure.
Hope you are able to make sense of some of this - geneology certainly is confusing at times!
