Dear All,

I notice some are posting they are researching ancestry.

Many on this list have been doing, some for decades, this in Ireland and why We are here, PLEASE take some advice and save you money.

You need NOT pay someone to do it as most is free if you put some effort into it. The Research places in Sligo are to be avoided, a Library or Librarian will do much more for free. The Sligo Gen. research service with offices have, from what I have been told, terrible service (and I hope they fix it) and even miss entire families, as they are set to deal with Tourists, not serious research. Again I hope they resolve it but till them I would not use such services (based on others reports).

If you want to pay someone vs. do it yourself - I or We can recommend private researchers that will do a good job for you based on doing good work for others.

But MOST of it is freely online now *(not like it was 10 Years ago when I started searching South Sligo).

Place is EVERYTHING. So the townland your Ancestor Hails from is critical. Find it. Look in your records, talk to your People, and get them thinking, even mentioning some areas, parishes and townlands can bring back memories(often I am told "I do not know" but when I mentioned local landmarks, which they thought I did not know, they recalled MUCH).

So follow the following list of FREELY Searchable records online:

1) In the Sligo List I post free databases available to anyone online, these are (in order of importance IMHO):
1) Census 1901 and 1911,

(2) Griffiths Valuation,
(3) Tithe
4) Land Records.
Irish Census 1901 and 1911

Griffiths Valuation

Tithes Applotments from the National Archives of Ireland.

LDS Family Search

AGAIN you need to get the PLACE IN SLIGO THEY WERE FROM, THE TOWNLAND, BARONY, OR POOR LAW UNION -- This is critical as records were made, and kept, based on Location.

If you cannot determine this you need more Help from your living people. If not possible come back and post what you know.

Finally, if going to Ireland, I suggest driving but I am confident. Do NOT get a stick, at least get automatic, If from the States, all Ireland drives small cars. Go Slow, ignore those Honking.

GET INSURANCE and MEDICAL COVERAGE before you go as they charge through the nose for it there.

People are happy to help, but as with most places, idiots are sometimes around, so if someone is rude, ignore them.

POST QUESTIONS HERE, as many others will respond.

Finally the Gathering 2013 promises to bring many from all over the World this Summer -- how can you decline a personal invitation? Weather is WET so always have rain gear, but it passes fast USUALLY....and be cautious with money, use basic smart security strategies, cash get from ATMs in a few hundred to lower costs, use CC cards, be be wary of pick pockets in crowds. AND HAVE FUN........

BTW, stay in B and Bs if at all possible, cheaper and you havre local knowledge and people can use the Euros. They have certified B & Bs if that is a concern, most people bend over backwards, AND you get a good Irish Breakfast which is usually worth more than the entire cost !! Hotels do NOT need business, the Irish People do !!
