Hello jobrien1980,

I located the church marriage index for Michael Kelly and Catherine Martin, as well as the birth indexes and baptism indexes for nine of their children at the Irish Family History Foundation (IFHF) website for County Galway (East).

The marriage was recorded in the Killeenadeema Catholic Church in 1875. I was hoping to find the civil marriage for Michael and Catherine, as civil marriages traditionally recorded the names and the occupations of the fathers of the bride and groom. With the names of the fathers of Michael and Catherine, you would have a better chance of locating the birth and possibly baptism records for Michael and Catherine. More on civil marriages later.

The births of the Kelly children were recorded in Bullaun, Galway. The IFHF notes these are (CP), that is, Civil Parish births. The Civil Parish this refers to is actually the Civil Parish of Loughrea. Bullaun was situated within the Civil Parish of Loughrea.

The baptisms were recorded in the Killeenadeema Catholic Church.

The names of the children in the birth and baptism indexes, as well as their years of birth and baptism are: Martin (1876); Patt/Patrick (1879); Bridget (1881); Mary (1883/1884); John (1886); Kate/Catherine (1889); Margaret (1891); Michael (1893); and Thomas (1895).

The indexes show the first-born son of Michael Kelly and Catherine Martin was Martin. He may have been named after his paternal grandfather, that is, his father’s father.

The IFHF homepage can be found at: http://www.rootsireland.ie/

Before accessing indexes at the IFHF you’ll first have to register. Registration is free. You’ll also be able to access the marriage, birth, and baptism indexes for the Kelly family that I did for free, but you will be charged to obtain transcriptions of the records from the IFHF. You’ll have to purchase credits with a credit card to obtain the transcriptions. The IFHF website has more information about purchasing credits for baptism, as well as birth, marriage, and death or burial transcriptions at: http://www.rootsireland.ie/index.php?id=78

The advantage of ordering records from the IFHF is that as soon as credit card information is processed, the records are sent to your computer, so that you don’t have to wait very long to view it.

THE MARRIAGE INDEX

One of the difficulties with finding some IFHF indexes, is that you have to spell the first name of the individual exactly, or you will not get any results for the efforts of your search. This was the case originally with finding the marriage index for Michael and Catherine. The IFHF search engine did not accept the spelling “Michael” for the groom’s first name. I had seen this before with previous searches at the IFHF over the past several years, and figured out the search engine was looking for the Irish language spelling for the name Michael, which is Micheal. To be more exact, the spelling of the name should include a mark over the letters i and a in the name. This mark in Irish is called a “Sina Fada,” (pronounced Sheena Fah-da), meaning “Long Stroke.” With the Sina Fada the name in Irish looks like this: Mícheál. The name in the Irish is pronounced “Mee-hall.”

The search engine accepted the Irish spelling of the name with and also without the Sina Fada over the letters i and a in Micheal’s name. I’ve kept the Irish spelling Mícheál in the index below however, as that’s how it may be spelled in the original church marriage record as recorded by the Killeenadeema parish priest.

The marriage index follows:

1 match for the search criteria: Kelly Mícheál 1875 Parish: KILLEENADEEMA (RC)

Civil Registration commenced in Ireland in 1845 when the government recorded Protestant marriages. Civil Registration of births, marriages, and deaths for all religious denominations began in 1864, which means there may be a civil marriage record for Michael and Catherine. As noted earlier, civil marriage records traditionally included the names and occupations of the fathers of the groom and bride, as well as the witnesses to the marriage. The Civil Marriage record should also include the addresses of the groom and bride at the time of the marriage, their ages, whether they had been previously married, the groom’s occupation, and the name of the parish priest who married the couple.

Civil Registration births, marriages, and deaths are held by the General Register Office (GRO) Roscommon Town, County Roscommon. To see if there is a civil marriage record for Michael Kelly and Catherine Martin, contact the GRO. For information, costs, and an application form to order the marriage record, go to the GRO website at: www.groireland.ie/

THE KELLY BIRTH AND BAPTISM INDEXES

From your post to the Ancestry.com message board for County Galway, dated 29 May 2013, I only knew the name of one of Michael and Catherine’s children. This is your great grandfather Michael. I located five of the Kelly children’s first names in the 1901 and 1911 Irish census enumerations for Sonnagh Old, District Electoral Division (DED) of Aille, Galway. I believe you have seen these enumerations from the National Archives of Ireland website, as you mentioned Sonnagh Old in your post to the message board for County Galway.

For the other three Kelly children I had to submit first names to the IFHF search engine, to see which names the search engine accepted or rejected, with the final result that nine of Michael and Catherine’s children were found.

I’ve transcribed both the 1901 and 1911 census enumerations for the Kelly family below for quick reference. The 1911 census shows that Michael and Catherine were married for 41 years, and in that time had 9 children, with all 9 children still living. The census is off concerning the number of years they were married, however. They were married in 1875 according to the IFHF index above, which means in 1911 they would have been married 36 years. These census returns were often inaccurate as concerns the ages of a person in a family as well as the number of years the husband and wife had been married

Notice in the enumerations that family members could speak both Irish and English:

In the 1879 birth index coming up, the search engine did not accept Patrick for the first name of the child, but did accept the abbreviation Patt. If you type Patrick as the child’s first name in the search engine form, you will not achieve any results for the search.

If you go back to the two indexes for Mary Kelly, you’ll notice her birth was recorded in 1884, but that her baptism was recorded in 1883. In this case I believe Mary was born sometime in mid to late December 1883, and that she had been baptized in December 1883, but that her birth wasn’t recorded by the district registrar until January of 1884, after the Christmas and New Year holidays.

You can access IFHF the birth transcriptions for the Kelly individually from nine indexes, just as you can order the baptism transcriptions for the Kelly children individually from nine indexes, or you can order all 18 transcriptions from just two indexes.

To order the birth transcriptions from one index do not include the first names of the children. In the place of a first name, use the % sign as a wild card. Also do not include a year of baptism, but make sure to select Bullaun (Civil Parish/District) from the Parish/District drop-down box.

The index will look like this:

SONNAGH OLD AND KILLEENADEEMA

The 1901 and 1911 census returns show the Kelly family living in Sonnagh Old, Galway. To view a Google Map of Sonnagh Old go to: http://tinyurl.com/lp6g52l

Once at the map you’ll see the letter A pointing to Sonnagh Old. In the left hand corner of the page, off the map, you’ll see a prompt labeled “Directions” highlighted in blue. Click on Directions and a drop-down box labeled A will appear. In the A box type Killeenadeema, Ireland, and then click on, “Get Directions.” The next map that appears shows the distance between Sonnagh Old and Killeenadeema by the shortest route is 10.1 kilometers, or 6.3 miles. You’ll alos see that Killeenadeema is just south of Lough Rea. I am wondering if in the late 1800s there may have been a straight path, or boreen from Sonnagh Old to Killeenadeema that would have shortened the distance between the two towns.

On the map the letter A is pointing to Killeenadeema. Left-click on the letter A to generate a “Street-view” thumbnail image of the town. Next, click on the image to enlarge it and you’ll be able to navigate your way to the Killeenadeema Catholic Church, by heading left from the letter A. When the image downloads you may have to pan 180 degrees to head down the road in the direction of the church, which has a cemetery in front of it.

This church appears to be old enough to have been in existence when Michael Kelly and Catherine Martin were married in 1875 and when their children were baptized there from the 1870s-1890s.

If you navigate your way in front of the graveyard and enlarge the image, you’ll notice a black headstone with the name “Martyn” engraved in yellow or gold lettering.

GRIFFITHS VALUATION

The next search involved looking for Kellys and Martins in the townland of Sonnagh Old in an Irish property tax record known as Griffiths Valuation.

Griffiths Valuation, was enumerated in the 32 counties of Ireland between 1847 and 1864. The valuation for the Civil Parish of Killeenadeema, County Galway, was completed by the year 1856. Sonnagh Old was located in the Killeenadeema Civil Parish.

Unlike a census, Griffiths Valuation did not enumerate individual members of a family, such as husband, wife, and children in a household residence. Those named in the valuation were individuals who leased property. Each person who paid to lease the property was called an “Occupier.” The other person listed in Griffiths Valuation was the person who owned the property, or who worked as the middleman for the owner. This person was called the “Immediate Lessor.” In many cases, people with the same last names leased property in the same town. If the town were small enough like Sonnagh Old, they were probably related.

You can access Griffiths Valuation transcriptions and original copies for free at the askaboutireland website link at: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml

I didn’t find the surname Martin in Sonnagh Old in Griffiths Valuation, but I did locate a Martin Kelly and a Michael Kelly in Sonnagh Old. They, and 18 other “Occupiers” leased over 1,639 acres of land in common in Sonnagh Old, from an Immediate Lessor named the Earl of Clancarty. The only other person in Sonnagh Old listed as an Occupier in Griffiths valuation is Patrick Rathbourne, who leased the school house and over an acre of land from the Earl.

In the Griffiths Valuation entries for Martin and Michael Kelly, you’ll see the amount of land leased was the 1639 acres. They would only have leased a portion of this land in common with the other “Occupiers” of the townland.

The Griffiths Valuation entry for Marin Kelly is below:

No. and Letters of Reference to Map: 1m
Civil Parish: Killeenadeema
Townland: Sonnagh, Old
Occupier: Martin Kelly
Immediate Lessor: Earl of Clancarty
Description of Tenement: House, offices, & land
Area of Land: 1639 Acres, 0 Roods, 5 Perches
Rateable Annual Valuation of Land: 5 Pounds
Rateable Annual Valuation of Buildings: 1 Pound
Total Annual Valuation of Rateable Property: 6 Pounds
____

Griffiths Valuation shows that Martin Kelly had leased a house and an “office” from the Earl of Clancarty in Sonnagh Old. His portion of the land he leased was valued at 5 Pounds. His house and offices were valued at 1 Pound, for a total valuation of 6 Pounds. He would have paid a percentage of this value toward the tax.

An “office” in a Griffiths Valuation record could be any type of outbuilding, such as a barn, stable, shed, blacksmith shop, piggery, etc.

The map number at the top of the Griffiths Valuation entry (1m) refers to an Ordnance Survey Map from the time period noting the location of Martin’s lease in Sonnagh Old. You can access these maps from the index of Occupiers for Killeenadeema, under “Map Views,” at: http://tinyurl.com/mszht95

The Ordnance Survey Map is superimposed over a modern map of the Killeenadeema through means of a sliding scale in the upper right portion of the map, above the label for “Show Towns.”

While I have located townlands on these online versions of the Ordnance Survey Maps, I’ve had a difficult time in finding specific locations, based on the map coordinates for individual occupiers. It may be a lot less difficult to find some individual occupiers on the original hard cover Ordnance Survey Maps, which are held by the Valuation Office in Dublin. But, I have viewed some original Ordnance Survey Maps for a County Limerick ancestor at the Valuation Office, now situated in Abbey Street Lower, Dublin, but could only locate the general area of his lease, not the specific map coordinate of his lease as found in his Griffiths Valuation entry.

Next is the Griffiths Valuation entry for Michael Kelly in Killeenadeema:

No. and Letters of Reference to Map: 1s
Civil Parish: Killeenadeema
Townland: Sonnagh, Old
Occupier: Michael Kelly
Immediate Lessor: Earl of Clancarty
Description of Tenement: House, and land
Area of Land: 1639 Acres, 0 Roods, 5 Perches,
Rateable Annual Valuation of Land: 5 Pounds
Rateable Annual Valuation of Buildings: 10 Shillings
Total Annual Valuation of Rateable Property: 5 Pounds, 10 Shillings
____

The valuation for Michael Kelly at Map Reference No. 1s, shows that the portion of the acreage he leased was valued at 5 Pounds, while his house was valued at 10 Shillings, for a total valuation of 5 Pounds and 10 Shillings.

I also found a second Griffiths Valuation entry for an “Occupier” named Michael Kelly in the Civil parish of Killeenadeema. In this entry he is leasing over 20 acres of land, valued at 10 Pounds in the townland of Earlspark. The Immediate Lessor for the property is Michael Nugent.

I believe this Michael Kelly and the Michael Kelly in Sonnagh Old were the same person, as a house was not part of the lease in Earlspark.

The entry is below:

No. and Letters of Reference to Map: 5
Civil Parish: Killeenadeema
Townland: Earlspark
Occupier: Michael Kelly
Immediate Lessor: Michael Kelly
Description of Tenement: Land
Area of Land: 20 Acres, 2 Roods, 10 Perches,
Rateable Annual Valuation of Land: 10 Pounds
Rateable Annual Valuation of Buildings: -
Total Annual Valuation of Rateable Property: 10 Pounds
____

I also found Martins in Griffiths Valuation in the Civil Parish of Killeenadeema, leasing property in the townlands of Curhoor, Killeenadeema West, and Burroge. The first names of these Martins are Lawrence, Thomas, and Bridget. You can access the Griffiths Valuation for each Martin at the Killeenadeema index page at: http://tinyurl.com/jw354q7

CIRCUMSTANTIAL EVIDENCE

Information at the IFHF shows that the Killeendaeema baptism registers transcribed cover the years 1836-1908, while the marriages in the church were transcribed from 1836-1911.

I figured that, if Michael Kelly and Catherine Martin were married in 1875, they would have been born sometime in the 1850s. Because Catherine had 9 children over the course of 19 years, I would say she would probably have been in her late teens or early 20s when she married.

I wanted to see if I could, uncover their individual baptism indexes, but didn’t want to estimate their years of birth from the 1901 and 1911 census enumerations, as these enumerations couldn’t be trusted as to their accuracy. For instance the 1901 census shows that Michael Kelly was 49, and that "Cathryn" was 42, while the 1911 census gives Michael's age as 71 and Catherine's as 63. That’s a difference of over 20 years’ increase in age for both Michael and Catherine, but over a 10 year period.

If found, the baptism indexes would only be circumstantial evidence that these were the baptisms for your Michael Kelly and Catherine Martin ancestors. You would have to find other records that give the names of their parents, especially their mothers’ maiden names, to confirm or refute the information I uncovered at the IFHF.

I located an index for a Michael Kelly showing he was baptized in the Killeenadeema Catholic Church in 1856. I submitted two first names to the search engine for his father. These names were Martin and Michael. If you recall, Martin and Michael Kelly can be found in Griffiths Valuation leasing property from the Earl of Clancary in the townland of Sonnagh Old.

The search engine accepted Martin as Michael’s father. Next I submitted a several first names for Michael’s mother. The search engine accepted Bridget.

The baptism index for Michael Kelly is below:

1 match for the search criteria: Kelly Michael 1856 Parish: KILLEENADEEMA (RC)

Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Galway (East)
Surname: Kelly
First Name: Michael
Father's Surname: Kelly
Father's First Name: Martin
Mother's Surname:
Mother's First Name: Bridget

Year: 1856

Parish/District: KILLEENADEEMA (RC)
____

I now wanted to see if I could uncover Bridget’s maiden name. Looking for maiden names in baptism and birth indexes at the IFHF website can be hit and miss. To do this I went back to Griffiths Valuation for the townland of Sonnagh Old, to see what other surnames were listed there as Occupiers. The surnames of the Occupiers include: Lahy, Deely, Skehill, Mitchell, Shiel, Donoghue, Kirwan, Kelly, Moran, Hynes, Murray, McGlynn, and Rathbourne.

I figured there was the possibility that one of the surnames listed in Griffiths Valuation for Sonnagh Old, may also be Bridget’s maiden name. I submitted the first few surnames to the baptism index for Michael’s mother Bridget, and the search engine accepted Mitchell as Bridget’s maiden name.

Thus, the baptism index for Michael Kelly shows that his parents were Martin Kelly and Bridget Mitchell:

1 match for the search criteria: Kelly Michael 1856 Parish: KILLEENADEEMA (RC)

Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Galway (East)
Surname: Kelly
First Name: Michael
Father's Surname: Kelly
Father's First Name: Martin
Mother's Surname: Mitchell
Mother's First Name: Bridget

Year: 1856

Parish/District: KILLEENADEEMA (RC)
____

Next I wanted to see if there was a baptism index for Catherine Martin/Martyn recorded in the Killeenadeema Catholic Church in the 1850s. I found one index showing the baptism of a Catherine Martyn recorded in the Killeenadeema Catholic Church in 1854. The IFHF search engine accepted John as her father’s first name and Ann as her mother’s first name:

1 match for the search criteria: Martyn Catherine 1854 Parish: KILLEENADEEMA (RC)

Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Galway (East)
Surname: Martyn
First Name: Catherine
Father's Surname: Martyn
Father's First Name: John
Mother's Surname:
Mother's First Name: Ann

Year: 1854

Parish/District: KILLEENADEEMA (RC)
____

Once again I went back to the surnames of those Occupiers found in Griffiths Valuation for Sonnagh Old, to see if any one of those surnames may also be Ann’s maiden name. The 10th surname of the list of Occupiers is Hynes, which is what the search engine accepted as Ann’s maiden name.

The full index shows that Catherine’s parents were John Martyn and Ann Hynes:
