Surnames: Hitchcock
HITCHCOCK, John Wesley, was b c 1847 in IRE and immig to Brockville, ON, CAN, c 1850 with his parents, Thomas and Ann HITCHCOCK. The family legend is that JWH had a twin brother who d during the Atlantic crossing when they were 3 yr old. I suspect that JWH and his parents emig. from Co. Cork due to potato famine, but have no proof.

There may have been at least 2 Thomas Hitchcocks from IRE in ON, CAN, in the mid-1800s. I believe it is more likely that JWH's father was the Thomas Hitchcock who was listed in the 1871 census as a 71-year-old resident of Brockville (where JHW was also living in 1871). That Thomas was b c 1800, was a New Connexion Methodist, and was a farmer.

I recently learned from another researcher (Carol Saari) about a younger Thomas Hitchcock (b c 1830), who apparently emig. from COR, IRE, to NY with his parents, Robert (b 1786, COR, IRE, d 1854, Rochester, NY) and Elizabeth (Connell) Hitchcock (b COR, IRE, d 1862, Rochester, NY), and 4 siblings (John [d 1887, Joyceville, ON, CAN], Robert, Jr., Mary Ann, and Joseph [moved N of Kingston, ON, CAN]). This younger Thomas may have moved to ON, CAN, with his brothers John and Joseph.

The older and younger Thomas Hitchcocks could be closely related cousins.

John Wesley Hitchcock m Euphemia "Effie" Louise Fulford (b 6 Nov 1846, Belleville, d 3 Mar 1937, Brockville) on 6 Nov 1872 in Brockville. They had 2 dau's: my grm Annie Martha (Hitchcock) Maier (b 11 Jan 1876, Brockville, d 11 Feb 1958, Quantico, VA) and Caroline "Carrie" Louise Hitchcock (b 1 Nov 1878, Brockville, d 27 Mar 1969, Brockville). In 1872, JWH was an English Merchant's Clerk and a Weslayan Methodist. Our line's JWH separated from his wife and children c 1884, and we have no records of him since. Perhaps he moved to another Province or the U.S.

To make things interesting, there were at least 2 John Wesley HITCHCOCKs living in Leeds Co. (ON, CAN) during the latter half of the 19th century. A different JWH was b in ON, CAN, after 1852, d in 1955, and is bur in Maple Vale Cem., South Elmsley, Leeds Co. This other JWH is a son of Andrew & Martha (Warren) Hitchcock (m 1852), and descends from Luke Hitchcock of New Haven, CT (early 1600s).

Any information about Hitchcocks living in County Cork during the late 1700s or early 1800s would be welcome.
