Surnames: Harrington
The old Irish family of O hlongardail, which became translated into Hungerdell and then the English surname of Harrington, is traditionally associated with Bear and Bantry in Co. Cork and it remains populated with the family into modern times.
Very anciently perhaps, the Irish family was found in the area of Fermoy, for it is in this area that the old Irish family name is mentioned in early works. Several of the name are given in an 1851 census of the Union of Kilworth in Co. Cork, primarily in Glenwood townland.
Note the place name of the townland of Kippaghingerghill in Cork, perhaps marking an early settlement of the family. The Irish form of the name is nto met early or often, and moving into modern times, the spelling as Harrington has predominated.
Murchada, in his book on cork famly names, gives a list of many O Hingerdle persons who were pardoned circa 1601.
The Harrington family name remains centered in Co. Cork into modern times.
