Most of the Bradys in County Clare are descended from Bishop Hugh O'Grady who changed his name to Brady in the Reformation. Some of his Protestant descendants resided at Raheen, Tomgraney, Clare.
In the early 19th Century Henry Brady of Raheen was Lord of the Manor of Tomgraney. He married Mary Browne in 1788 and had three sons John, Thomas Browne, and Hugh. Thomas Browne Brady, a protestant clergyman, married Matilda Pentland and had the following children: John, Irby Henry, Matilda Sophia, Mary Emily, and Thomasina. The Brady estate was sold under the Encumbered Estates Act in 1852.
A Brady family related to those above were the Bradys of Kielty otherwise known as Callahy, near Bodyke. Here resided Anthony Brady who married Isabella Ringrose of Ballyvannon in 1742. They had sons Hugh Brady of Kielty (the father of the Edmund Brady who married Ann Molony in 1819 - see below) and John Brady of Belfield. Does anyone know the specific location of Belfield?
The daughters of Anthony Brady and Isabella were Alicia Brady (who married the Revd Sir William Read), Margaret Brady (who married George hastings of Killaloe). There was probably another daughter, because in his Will dated 1809 John Brady of Belfield makes a bequest to ' my nephew Wm Miller now an officer in the army'. In the index to the Killaloe Marriage Licence Bonds we find that a Mary Brady married James Miller in 1785. Anyone know anything about this family?
Roman Catholic Bradys from the Parish of Kilnoe and Tomgraney (now Tuamgraney) include:
William Brady and Judith Hartneady who were the parents of Michael 1844, Judy 1849, Sally 1849, John 1850, Judith 1852.
John Brady and Anne Crotty parents of Margaret 1836, Christy 1837, Mary 1840.
Thomas Brady and Mary Garvey parents of Ellen 1834,
Margaret 1833, James Brady/Mary Hogan
Pat 1833, Myles Brady/Mary Dea
Christy 1833, James Brady/Winnie Jones
Pat 1849, Dan Brady/Cathe O'Dea
Michael 1873, Anthony Brady/Bridget Walsh
Other children included Anthony and William. The entire family emigrated to Australia on the ship 'La Hogue'.
Three Brady sisters, Catherine, Eliza, and Margaret, the daughters of Edmund Brady and Ann Molony emigrated to Australia in the company of Michael McGrath and his family. Michael's wife was a cousin of the Brady girls. A nephew? of these Brady girls, Edwin or Edward Brady, became a well known Australian author in the late 19th Century.
Does anyone know anything about Jane Brady who married James Canny or Kenny in Tomgraney and who died at Avenel, VIC, Australia? Her father was a William Brady.
She emigrated to Australia circa 1865 with her family after she was widowed.
Note that there are several gaps and omissions in the Kilnoe and Tomgraney parish register. I dot not have any information on Bradys from any other Co. Clare parish.
