None of my family has used the Le Gette or the Leggett with the accent on the last sylable. We were always told that the rich ones used it that way.
Just before I left NC I found a shop shop in Fayetteville, NC with the name Le Gette on the front. The owner told me that he was from the Carribean, and I assumed he was of French descent.
I could find no other record of my French background. Martin County and the surrounding county plus Robeson County in the south of NC has the most Leggetts of any area that I have observed as I travel the USA.
I do have the record of one of the Leggetts of NC moving to HInds County, MS around 1832.
There are a number of Leggetts now in Mississippi. As with my family many of them are preachers. There is even a church in Biloxi named Leggett Memorial.
If you have any background on the Leggett and French connection in NC, I would appreciate it.
I have my lineage back to 1832 and maybe beyond.
I would like to get a copy of the Revolutionary War records for Martin and surrounding counties.
