I am tracing my family – who originate from a village in Co Down – known as Kilcoo. My great great great grandfather was John Boden – born approx. 1794 and died 8 June 1862 in Kilcoo Co Down. I believe his wife was Margaret Killen. John and Margaret had the following children: (that I know of):

John Boden born 1828 died 27 February 1908

Ellen Boden born 1831 died 27 February 1896 (my great great grandmother)

James Boden born 1844 died 29 May 1869

Mary Boden born 11 February 1840 died ?

Patrick Boden

Peter Boden born 13 June 1837 died 31 August 1888 – died in Newry Co Down

Michael Boden born 10 June 1834

Catherine Boden

From my research I have found the following information:

Peter Boden – born 13 June 1837 died 31 August 1888 in Newry Co Down. Peter Boden was married to Margaret. (ldaughter of Mary McGrath of Portaferry). Margaret died on the 2 June 1884 – age 29 Years. The death entry records her address as 7 King Street, Newry. She was the wife of a publican and grocer. From my research I can confirm that she is buried in the Boden family grave at Kilcoo Catholic Church.

I believe Peter Boden remarried (to Catherine) – sometime between 1884 and 1888 – Peter died on 31 August 1888. The death entry records his address as 19 Lower Water Street, Newry Co Down. His Will makes reference to his infant son – Peter Joseph (could this be your Patrick Joseph?). Catherine Boden (Peter’s 2nd wife) died on 4 June 1913 – her Will refers to her daughter Mary Rose Garland. Catherine Boden was a wholesale bottler/publican in Newry – in fact I have an original bottle.

My great great grandmother - Ellen Boden (born 1831 died 1896) married Patrick Campbell. They had six children. Two of these were:

(1) Ellen Campbell (my great grandmother)

- Ellen Campbell married Bernard Kelly - they had two sons : Michael and Patrick (my grandfather)

(2) Henry Campbell

I should point out that my interest in the Bodens arose from research into the life of my great granduncle Hanry Campbell.

Henry Campbell (born 1856 died 1924) – (Sir) Henry Campbell was an MP, Private Secretary to Charles S Parnell, and Town Clerk of Dublin for 28 years (until Dec 1920). He was knighted in the New Years Honours List of 1921. He died in March 1924.

I have various reports of his death, but the most interesting in commection with the Bodens is in the Newry Reporter (8 March 1924). It states that he was 2the second son of the late Mr P Campbell of Kilcoo, Co Down ….. his mother, prior to her marriage, being Miss Ellen Boden, aunt of Mr Joseph Boden of Canal Street Newry…” Could this be your Patrick Joseph Boden?

If any of this means anything please contact me …
