getting married in England - 18th century

This is more historical than geneological - but did you have to be an active member of a parish in 18th century England to get married there, or was any British citizen entitled to a marriage (much like today)?

The reason I am asking is I am trying to determine if my ancestors were conforming members of the Church of England or non-conformists (they were married in a conforming Anglican church). I know non-conformists (Congregationalists, Calvinists, etc) were tolerated in England after the Bill of Rights but were they able to get married outside of a prayer book-following Anglican church - or did they have to suck it up and get married in a parish church and then revert back to their non-conformist ways?
