Unfortunately I have very little information but my grandfather was listed as being employed as a van guard on a form filled out by my grandmother when she surrendered my father to the Thomas Coram Foundling Hospital. She states she did not know who his employer was and he is not listed on my fathers birth certificate. I did wonder if it was connected to the railways but searches only show results for "vanguard" which doesn't fit at all. She did say they met while she was employed at a Tin Merchants factory in Bermondsey in 1924. His name according to the form was John Waitling which I know believe could be John Wakeling.
Does anyone know what exactly a van guard was employed to do? If I can find this out then it may narrow down my search on possible employers.
