In the 1911 census, the name is clearly entered (by Frederick himself) as Boshier - it may be that they changed the spelling in WW1 to avoid any pronunciation confusion with the "Bosh" as the Germans were known.

Going further back the same family are also recorded as Bousher ...from Gloucestershire.

In Surname reference works, it is suggested to be a derivation of the French word Buschier which means a timber merchant, which also covers names like Bowsher..... that doesn't mean of course that your husbands family were French.

Tracking back the family to workout their origins is the only way to know where they actually came from.
