Thanks for your email. My Benjamin Charles Thomas Gray (he went by Charles) had been married in England in 1858 and had 4 daughters.
Family folklore has it that he was given a substantial amount by his father-in-law to leave England and never return.
He then turned up in Singapore. I know for certain that he had a son, Lionel, with Annie Gertrude Millington on 30 September 1897. I have not been able to find a marriage date for them at this stage, although a birth certifiacate for one of the later children born in Australia states that they were married on 18 July 1896.
On reading the Parish Register Film for St Andrews, I also found a birth for a daughter Patricia, born 24 September 1894. The register stated that the parents were Benjamin Charles Thomas Gray and Alice Millington. I would be surprised if there was more than 1 person with the same name in Singapore at the time. No-one in the family has ever heard of this Patricia, but I am inclined to think that she is an earlier child born to him and Annie (with a mistake in her name), or a child born to him and a relation of Annie's.
I would certainly be interested in the marriage of this Charles Gray that you have, as I think he may have gotten around a bit.
I look forward to hearing from you on it.
The family came to Australia in about 1910, so I would be surprised if there were any people with the Gray name connected with us after that date. Again, though, anything is possible. He may well have had children by other women, and there could be quite a few out there that are related to us.
John William is a combination, although fairly common, that ahs been used in the family.
Thanks again for your help. I look forward to hearing from you.
