Looking to find where in Russia Charles JAFFIE b. ~1863 would have emigrated from to USA about 1883. Family lore says he was lieutenant in Czar's cavalry. A long time has passed, but it seems as though there was reference to St. Petersburg renamed Petrograd, later changed to Stalingrad.
Charles married a Russian born wife, Rose surname unknown and they raised children around Chicago in Cook Co. IL per 1920 census.
They probably also changed their given names to sound more American like people do. Perhaps Rose was a Ljiljana, who knows - maybe he was Karel? I'll take any hints I can get.
I'm not attached to this surname spelling when it comes to tracking spelling variants, I need what I need. Heh.
Would I be correct to assume that most Russ emigrants shipped out from Bremen to the new world, or were there other ports as likely?
