Brian,
None of this is meant to be taken personally but I'm going to be really blunt and honest.
There is no way that a commercial website is going to help a competing free website get users. The only objective is to glean as much of their data as you can get away with. You're actually doing damage to other sites by crawling them...slowing them down and causing users to have trouble accessing them...and I'm sure you realize this.
Instead of contacting sites and discussing this with them you just went ahead and spidered them putting them in the position of having to try to contact you and waste their time to prevent something that they didn't cause. That's arrogance. The only place any of this was posted was in your blog (which only some of your users read) and on this hidden board. Most sites knew nothing about this. That's sneaky.
Did you mention your bot's name? I don't remember hearing it. That's devious.
I don't know who you talked to that would give you good feedback on any of this. Most everything I've read (other than Ancestry's clickers) sounded angry about it. The people I've talked to are outraged.
As far as your dozens of emails, I imagine that people with a family website might go for it...but that really wouldn't be of that much use to you.
After buying all the genealogical sites that they could, Ancestry is still not content. They want it all and they're intent on getting it any way they can. But what's really galling is the devious, diabolical, and disgusting way they're going about it...
If you can "prove" any of this wrong, please do.
Nan
