Surnames: Hritz, Hricz, Hricko, Hritzkowin,
Most of the Hritzes I have been able to find through the internet are from the area at the foot of the Carpathian mountains. They came to the US around the turn of the century and most of the jobs available to them were in coal mines but that was a shame since many had other talents and they were mistreated by the owners of the coal mines. My grandparents lost a baby because the Pinkerton men came and tossed all the workers out of the company houses in the snow in midwinter. That baby was only a few weeks old and died of pneumonia before they could find another place to stay. There are names like Hritzkowin, Hricko, and Hricz written as they came to Ellis Island and there were frequent misspellings. In the old country, your name was what the priest wrote on your birth certificate and of course that could also be a result of some of the variations in the names. Our name was written Hritz here in the States but when I found a baptismal certificate written in Margecany, the name was written Hricz.
