Hello my name is Roger. I have always been intrigued by my great grand father's last name of Boatswain, always wondering how the name originated. Did it derive from the actual seaman's position, given to a great great grand as part of his freedom from slavery? Who knows?
What I do know is that I grew up on St. Vincent with my great grands in Sion Hill. My Great Grandfather's name was Charles Augustus Boatswain, his father was Fredrick Boatswain. He lived in Aruba and worked at the oil refineries in Venezuela before the family moved to St. Vincent. My Great Grandmother's name was Auada Boatswain, Butte before marriage. Her Mother's name was Ethel Butte (Ethel's Father was Irish) and her Father's name was Francis Butte.
I know that we have family in Monserrat, Trinidad (my cousin Maxine was from Trinidad), Aruba, UK, Canada, & US.
I appreciate this blog and look forward to finding more answers with you all.
