Subject: Simon Banks Obituary
Date: Tuesday, May 22, 2001
Surnames: Banks, Sandtroen
Spring Valley Sun, May 19, 1932
Simon Banks was born March 22, 1845 in Lille Elvedalen, Norway. In 1870 he came to America, settling at first in Menomonie and a little later at Eau Galle. June 19, 1874, he married Miss Siri Sandtroen, and the young couple went to house keeping on the groom's farm in Spring Lake, which has since been their home.
Three children were born to them - Martin and Josie, at home, and Inger, who died in 1902. Mrs. Banks died on March 2 of this year.
Mr. Banks had exceptionally good health and a rugged constitution. In his earlier years, before trading points were established at Spring Valley and Elmwood, it was nothing unusual for him to walk from his home to Menomonie and back the same day, carrying quite a load each way.
About five years ago he had a severe attack of the flu, and although he survived the attack, it left him in a weakened condition. He has, however, been up and about most of the time. Since Mrs. Banks' death his decline has been quite rapid. Wednesday, May 11, he died.
The funeral was held from the home and the Spring Lake Lutheran church Friday, May 13, Rev. Berven officiating. Burial was made in the Spring Lake cemetery.
Mr. Banks' death marks the passing of one of the oldest settlers in Spring Lake, where he was held in high esteem because of his sterling character, his friendliness and willingness to help whenever called upon.
