This branch of Mayo are late comers to the Virginia colony. John Mayo came to Old Rappananock in 1635 and is the Father of Valentine and grandfather of James of Fluvannah county across the river from Powhatan and had 15 children 11 of whom fraught in the Revolution. Plenty of Mayo families in Va nearly 100 years before 1727 and account for most Mayo families in US now.
Mayo came to England with the conquest of William in 1067 as Mayeux and was givin vast land in Cornwall.
Mayo in Ireland had to do with the Yew trees and not a family name.
