FOUNTAIN HILLS, ARIZ. - Helen C. “Connie” (Whalen) Mitchell, born in Cleveland, Ohio on Oct. 11, 1943, the daughter of William Whalen and Helen (Block) Whalen, passed away March 15, 2018, in her retirement city of Fountain Hills, Arizona, after a lengthy illness.

Connie moved to Youngstown, Ohio following the death of her parents in 1951. She was raised there by her loving uncle, Alfred Whalen, and devoted aunt, Mary (Fabian) Whalen, who were members of St. Edward’s parish.

Connie graduated from St. Edward’s in 1957, Ursuline High School in 1961 and Youngstown State University in 1965, earning a BS in Education.
Connie returned to Cleveland, where she taught in Cleveland City Schools for 32 years as a Martha Holden Jennings scholar.
In 1969 Connie earned her Master’s in Education from Arizona State University.

Connie leaves behind her cherished five children, Betty Thompson, Brandon Mitchell, Carrie Salsbury (Paul), Bonnie Stockton (Mike), and Sharon Melton (Zane); 11 beloved grandchildren; her sister and closest friend, Karen Bayne (Rob); her devoted aunt, Mary (Fabian) Whalen
As per Connie’s request, her ashes will be buried at the foot of her parents’ grave in Calvary Cemetery, 1000 Miles Ave. in Cleveland, Ohio.
