About this project This collection contains a portion of the Bishop's Transcripts (copies of parish register entries) that are located in Wells, England. It only includes records coming from parishes with names beginning with the letters A-Hi.

Project Instructions This collection contains a portion of the Bishop's Transcripts (copies of parish register entries) that are located in Wells, England. It only includes records coming from parishes with names beginning with the letters A-Hi.

We will be keying name, gender, event date, parents, spouse and event type. The images are typed and easy to read. Some abbreviations are used in the images to indicate genders, etc. The wiki image samples can help in deciphering these abbreviations.

Choose the "Transcripts" form type for images with names to be keyed.

Event City

Key the event city as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance.

Event Type

Key the event type using one of the following words:

Burial
Marriage
Christenings

Event Year

Key the year from the event date as seen on the record.

Event Month

Key the month in its three-letter abbreviation from the event date using the dictionary provided to assist you. If the month appears as a number, key as seen.

Event Day

Key the day from the event date as seen on the record.

Prefix

Key any titles before the given name, such as "Dr," "Mr," or "Mrs," of the primary person as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Only prefix values should be keyed into the prefix field. The primary name is the first name after the month and day.

Given

Key the first name or initial and any middle names of the primary person as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Initials should be keyed with a space between them and without entering periods. The primary name is the first name after the month and day.

Surname

Key the surname as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. The primary name is the first name after the month and day. If the surname is blank and can be logically copied from either a parent or a spouse, key that surname.

Suffix

Key all titles, such as "Jr" or "III", following the surname of the primary person as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. The primary name is the first name after the month and day.

Alias Surname

Key any Alias Surname which appears. Occasionally an alternate name may be recorded for a given individual. This name may be found after the abbreviation "als." Key the alias surname as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. The primary name is the first name after the month and day.

Gender

Key the gender in its full form using the dictionary provided for assistance. Gender may be determined by key words, such as "son of", "daughter of", etc., or by gender specific prefixes. In some cases "male" and "female" will appear next to a name.

For marriage records, key "Male" for the primary person unless the name suggests otherwise.

Parent 1 Given

Key the first name or initial and any middle names of the first parent of the primary person as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Initials should be keyed with a space between them and without entering periods.

Parent 1 Surname

Key the surname of the first parent of the primary person as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. If the surname is blank and can be logically copied from either a parent or a spouse, key that surname.
