About this project This collection contains the Roblin Report and Roll of Unenrolled Indians of Western Washington, as well as the applications for enrollment and allotment. The documents are a mix of type-written and hand-written documents, some of which are difficult to read.

This collection contains the Roblin Report and Roll of Unenrolled Indians of Western Washington, as well as the applications for enrollment and allotment.

From these documents we are keying three different form types: the Roblin Roll, Affidavits, and Genealogy Information.

The Roblin Roll was compiled in 1919 by Special Agent Charles E. Roblin who enumerated and enrolled natives not previously enrolled in a tribe in the western area of the state of Washington. It contains a list of names organized by family, and generally grouped by tribe, along with their P.O. Address. From these images we are keying individual's names and their residence city and state listed in the P.O. Address.

The affidavits are part of the application for enrollment and allotment and contain information about the individual that is applying, as well as their family. From these we are keying the applicant's name, residence city, county and state, birth date, and birth city, county and state. If spouses and children appear on the affidavit, they will also be keyed, as a seperate record for each individual, with their gender and age, if given. Please note that even though affidavits are typically categorized as Cover pages, for this project they should be marked as the Affidavit form type since there is information that needs to be keyed.

Genealogy Information are images that contain information about an individual's family, usually with names and vital dates. From these images we are keying all names with any birth or death dates that might be recorded. Sometimes the vital dates will not be directly after a person's name, and the entire document should be read in order to match up the vital dates with the correct individual. Names of any witnesses, court officials, special agents, etc. should not be keyed. If the image only contains the name of the applicant, it is not a Genealogy Information form type.

Alias names should be keyed wherever they appear. They will typically be a person's native name or their English name. Key whichever name appears first as the Given/Surname with the variation as the Alias name.

Choose the "Affidavit" form type when the image says "Affidavit and General Power of Attorney" at the top of the page.

Prefix

Key any titles before the Given name, such as "Dr", "Rev", "Mr" or "Mrs".The name of the applicant will appear on the first line after the word "I".  Names of children, if any, will be listed under the sections for named children under 21 and over 21.  Spouse name is not included on the form, but in rare cases may be written in.  If so, key as a separate record.

Given

Key the first name or initial and any middle names of the primary person to whom the record pertains using a dictionary if provided for assistance. If a name does not appear in the dictionary then key the name as seen.The name of the applicant will appear on the first line after the word "I". Names of children, if any, will be listed under the sections for named children under 21 and over 21. Spouse name is not included on the form, but in rare cases may be written in. If so, key as a separate record.

Surname

Key the Surname using the dictionary provided for assistance. If the surname does not appear in the dictionary then key the surname as seen.The name of the applicant will appear on the first line after the word "I". Names of children, if any, will be listed under the sections for named children under 21 and over 21. Spouse name is not included on the form, but in rare cases may be written in. If so, key as a separate record.

Suffix

Key all titles, such as "Jr" or "III", following the surname of the primary person to whom the record applies using a dictionary if provided for assistance. If a suffix does not appear in a dictionary then key the suffix as seen.The name of the applicant will appear on the first line after the word "I". Names of children, if any, will be listed under the sections for named children under 21 and over 21. Spouse name is not included on the form, but in rare cases may be written in. If so, key as a separate record.

Residence City

Key the Residence City or Town using the dictionary provided for assistance.  If a city or town does not appear in the dictionary then key the city or town as seen.The Residence City will be on the first line after the word "of".  It is only provided for the applicant, not the children.

Residence County

Using the dictionary provided, key the county where the person resided.  If a county is not found in the dictionary then key the county as seen.The Residence County will be on the second line after the "County of". It is only provided for the applicant, not the children.

Residence State

Key the full name of the state of residence using the dictionary provided for assistance.The Residence State will typically be "Washington" as it is pre-printed on the form. Occasionally an individual will not reside in Washington. In this case, Washington will be crossed out and a different state will be written above. Key the the state that has been written in. It is only provided for the applicant, not the children.

Birth Day

Key the birth day from the birth date. The birth date will appear on the line after the phrase "I was born on the".  It is only provided for the applicant, not the children.

Birth Month

Key the birth month in its three letter abbreviation using the dictionary for assistance from the birth date. The birth date will appear on the line after the phrase "I was born on the". It is only provided for the applicant, not the children.

Birth Year

Key the birth year from the birth date. The birth date will appear on the line after the phrase "I was born on the". It is only provided for the applicant, not the children.

Birth City

Key the city of birth using the dictionary for assistance. If the birth city is not in the dictionary then key as seen.The birth city will be after the birth date on the line with the phrase "at or near".  It is only provided for the applicant, not the children.

Birth County

Key the birth county using the dictionary for assistance. If the birth county is not in the dictionary then key as seen.The birth county will be after the birth city. It is only provided for the applicant, not the children.

Birth State

Key the full name of the birth state of using the dictionary provided for assistance.The Birth State will typically be "Washington" as it is pre-printed on the form. Occasionally an individual will not be born in Washington. In this case, Washington will be crossed out and a different state will be written above. Key the the state that has been written in. It is only provided for the applicant, not the children.

Age

Key the Age at the time the record was recorded, using the dictionary provided.  The age is only provided for children on affidavit forms, not for the applicant.Valid ages include numeric digits between "0" and "120" and fractions between "1/12" and "11/12". If an age includes years, months, and/or days key only the years. For example, if an age appears as 10 years, 7 months, key age as "10" If an age appears in months, such as 10 months, key age as a fraction: "10/12" If an Age includes years plus a fraction, such as 3 3/12, key only the year: "3." If the age is less than one month, key "0."

Gender

Key the Gender field where it is provided.  Key as "Male" or "Female".  The Gender is not provided for the applicant, but is usually provided for children, where it says "girl or boy" or "man or woman".  Key as "Male" or "Female", not as seen. The correct gender will be circled, underlined, or else the wrong gender crossed out.  Do not infer gender from the names, but only key where it is given on the form.

Choose the "Genealogy Information" form type when the image contains genealogical information about a person or a family. If only the name of the applicant, or one individual appears on an image, it is not a "Genealogy Information" form type. These images will either be typed letters or handwritten information.

If the native name was keyed in the Given name field, key the first English name listed in the alias fields.

Key any Alias Surname which appears using the dictionary for assistance. If the alias surname does not appear in the dictionary, key as seen. When there are multiple aliases listed, if the native name has not already been keyed in the Given name field, key the first native name listed as the alias. If the native name was keyed in the Given name field, key the first English name listed in the alias fields.

Birth Day

Key the birth day from the birth date if given.

Birth Month

Key the birth month in its three letter abbreviation from the birth date if given.

Birth Year

Key the birth year from the birth date if given. If the birth year is listed as "about 1904" it should be keyed as "Abt 1904".

Death Day

Key the death day from the death date if given.

Death Month

Key the death month in its three letter abbreviation from the death date if given.

Death Year

Key the Death Year from the death date if given. If the death year is listed as "about 1904" it should be keyed as "Abt 1904".

Choose the "Roblin Roll" form type when the image is of a type written list of individuals, usually grouped by family, along with their Native American Blood amount and P.O. address. It will typically say "Schedule of Unenrolled Indians" at the top.

Use the “Cover page, Section header, etc” type for images that don’t contain any data, but might be interesting to look at because they provide some type of context for the image set. For instance, historical notes, and so forth.
Note: Affidavits in this project should NOT be marked as Cover pages. Affidavits have information that is being keyed and should be marked as the Affidavit form type. See the Affidavit section in the wiki.

Use the “Image with no data” type for images that don’t contain any data or any useful context that might be interesting for someone to look at. For instance, an image containing only the blank background or an image with a microfilm target on it.
