Project Instructions:

Even though the records are relating to Polish district administrative offices, the records are in German.

This project consists of three form types: (1) Individual Record, (2) Name List, and (3) Miscellaneous Record.

Individual Record: Images that contain information about a single individual recorded on pre-printed forms. The forms will often be labeled with either "Lfd. Nr. ##" or "Personalbogen" at the top and center of the page.

Some "Personalbogen" forms consist of multiple pages, in which case there are sections of information for the father ("Vaters") and the mother ("Mutter") in the top half of the second page. This second page should also be classified as an Individual Record and have the parents' names keyed. There is no other information to be keyed from the second page. The third page does not have any information to be keyed and so should be classified as "Cover page, Section header, etc."

Name List: Images that consist of lists of names. Some of these lists have column headings that identify what information is in each column. Others do not.

Miscellaneous Record: Images that do not fit into one of the other form type categories but has information to key. There will be a wide variety of records that fit into this category. At a minimum, images marked as this form type should have at least one name keyed.

Keying the Documents:

You may receive an image set that consists of several images in a row regarding the same primary person. This is okay. Key the name on each image.

For records such as correspondence, biographies, narratives, or other documents that do not consist of pre-printed forms and would otherwise require translating and reading through a block of text, only key the name of the primary individual, which should appear at the top of the page or somewhere near the beginning of the text. Do not worry about keying any other names mentioned in the document.

Do not key the names of government or other officials as the goal is capture information about the people whom the document is about, not the people who administered or signed the documents.

Many names and locations will contain diacritics. Key those as seen using the "Insert international characters" button located directly above the keying grid and directly below the image.

For further keying instructions and ongoing community discussion regarding this project, please review the project page on the wiki and the accompanying discussion tab.

This project uses diacritics

If you are using Windows XP there are some diacritics that may not be displayed correctly. This occasionally happens in newer browsers and operating systems as well. You may see a box inserted as a letter. For example: Mie□dzyrzecz instead of Międzyrzecz

When you key letters with diacritics, it is best to use the international character set provided or the numeric shortcut shown in the keying tool. (Note: Not all diacritics will have a shortcut displayed.) Do not use other keyboard shortcuts as a work around. For arbitrators and reviewers who are using Windows XP operating systems, if you see the □ displayed, you will need to key the diacritic using the international characters symbols provided in the tool to ensure the proper diacritic is being entered.

Individual Record

Use this form type for images that contain information about a single individual recorded on pre-printed forms.
