About this project The collection contains registration cards of Jewish prisoners of war held in various German POW camps (or "Stalags") in the area of Lublin, Poland from 1939 to 1941.  The cards provide names, places of birth, dates of birth, parents' names, and prison camp.  Most also provide a photograph and fingerprint of the prisoner.

Important Note:

UPDATE:  The International Characters in the keying tool now support the kropka ( Ż )  Please only use the keying tool to enter this character.
Polish has a special diacritic that is not currently in the International Characters dialog of the Keying Tool. This is being remedied but in the meantime should you find a record that contains a kropka (ż), you will need to copy and paste it from this page into the keying tool. 

This project uses diacritics 

If you are using Windows XP there are some diacritics that may not be displayed correctly. This occasionally happens in newer browsers and operating systems as well. You may see a box inserted as a letter. For example: Mie□dzyrzecz instead of Międzyrzecz

When you key letters with diacritics, it is best to use the international character set provided or the numeric shortcut shown in the keying tool. (Note: Not all diacritics will have a shortcut displayed.) Do not use other keyboard shortcuts as a work around. For arbitrators and reviewers who are using Windows XP operating systems, if you see the □ displayed, you will need to key the diacritic using the international characters symbols provided in the tool to ensure the proper diacritic is being entered.

Misc Keying Notes:

• Beware of the images that contain multiple cards. Each card should be keyed as a separate line item. Even if they are for the same person. Sometimes the camp changes, or additional information appears on the 2nd card.

• Jude (Jewish) may appear in several places: either as religion, as ethnicity, or as nationality. It is important that it be keyed in the same field as it appears in the original card. An alternate word used for Jewish is Mosaisch (abbreviated mos). It is also occasionally entered as Israel or a variant thereof.

• Entries should be keyed as written. Eg Polen or Pole should not be changed to Polnisch. This also means no expanding abbreviations, translating any words, or attempting to correct errors in the original.
• Abbreviations should not be expanded. Years are also keyed as written, either as two digits or four.
  • Exception: Months are keyed in full.
• Punctuation should be keyed as written.
  • Exception: periods (full stops) are omitted.

If cou come across a form called"Wehrdienstbeschädigungsliste" use the multiple form choice and extract all the information you can.
