Project Instructions This collection contains handwritten and typewritten tax lists collected in the state of Tennessee during the 1800's.

There are two form types from which we are keying in this collection. The first is the Tax List, which will contain names of all individuals residing in a location, and often will include information about their property which can be taxed. From these lists we are keying all names. If the county and year of the tax list appears on image they should also be keyed.

Do not key names of companies into the county field. If a tax list is split up into companies, skip over the company and keep keying names from the tax list. Do not create new sections whenever a new company appears.

The second form type is the Title Page. It will typically be an archive made image containing the county name and the year of the tax list. Both of these values must be keyed from the title page. Occasionally for the type written compilation of tax lists there will be no obvious title page or archive made image. For these images the county and the year will usually appear as a chapter title on the page. (For example "V. Jefferson County 1880") If an image contains the county and the year of the tax list it should be classified as "Title Page" and the county and the year should be keyed. If it contains the county and the year along with a tax list, it should be classified as "Tax List" with the county and year information being keyed as well as all names that appear.

Do not key any names that appear in a narrative. Only key names that appear on tax lists.

If an image does not contain the county, year, or a tax list, this image should be classified as "Cover page, Section header, etc".

Cover page, Section header, etc

File:Cover_Page_TN_Tax_Records_Example_1.JPG

Use the “Cover page, Section header, etc” type for images that don’t contain any data, but might be interesting to look at because they provide some type of context for the image set. For instance, historical notes, affidavits, and so forth.

Image with no data

File:Image_with_no_data_TN_Tax_Records_Example_1.JPG

Use the “Image with no data” type for images that don’t contain any data or any useful context that might be interesting for someone to look at. For instance, an image containing only the blank background or an image with a microfilm target on it.
