About this project This collection contains registers maintained by the Clerk of Council documenting free persons of color residing in Savannah, Georgia. According to a City ordinance of 1839, owners of slaves and guardians of free persons of color were required to register and obtain badges from the Clerk of Council before hiring out or permitting the employment of their charges. All free persons of color 16 years of age (lowered to 14 in 1854) or older were required to register annually with the Clerk of Council. Notice of removal from the city was also required.

Project Instructions This collection contains registers maintained by the Clerk of Council documenting free persons of color residing in Savannah Georgia. We will be keying date of the register, the name of the individual, nativity, occupation, residence, age, and parentage.

Some images will have no header information to assist in keying. If you come across one of these images, use one of the following formats to help identify which fields to key. (Image samples are included below.)

Register of Free Persons



Choose the "Register of Free Persons" form type when the image contains registers of free persons of colors. It will typically include the date of the register, the name of the individual, nativity, occupation, residence, age, and parentage.

Suffix

Key all titles, such as "Jr" or "III", following the surname as seen on the record using the dictionary provided to assist you.

Surname

Key the surname as seen on the record using the dictionary provided to assist you. If ditto marks appear in place of surname, copy the surname from above into this field.

Given

Key the first name or initial and any middle names as seen on the record using the dictionary provided to assist you. Initials should be keyed with a space between them and without entering the periods.

Prefix

Key any titles before the given name, such as "Dr," "Mr," or "Mrs," as seen on the record using the dictionary provided to assist you.

Birth Place

Key the birth place from the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. If a location is not found in the dictionary then key the location as seen.

Age

Key the age at the time the record was recorded.

Register Day

Key the day from the register date.

Register Month

Key the month in its three-letter abbreviation from the register month using the dictionary provided to assist you.

Register Year

Key the year from the register date.

Residence City

Key the residence city from the "Residence" column as seen on the image using the dictionary provided to assist you. Only key any villages, towns, or cities. Many locations in the residence column will be lot numbers or street names and should not be keyed.

Occupation

Key the occupation as seen on the image using the dictionary provided to assist you.

Parent Given

Key the first name or initial and any middle names of the parent as seen on the record using the dictionary provided to assist you. Parent name may be found in the column named "Parentage". If ditto marks appear in place of a parents name, copy the parent name from above into this field. Do not key the guardian name into this field.

Parent Surname

Key the surname of the parent as seen on the record using the dictionary provided to assist you. Parent name may be found in the column named "Parentage". If ditto marks appear in place of a parents name, copy the parent name from above into this field. Do not key the guardian name into this field.

Guardian Given

Key the first name or initial and any middle names of the guardian as seen on the record using the dictionary provided to assist you. Initials should be keyed with a space between them and without entering the periods.

Guardian Surname

Key the surname of the guardain as seen on the record using the dictionary provided to assist you.

Microfilm



Choose the "Microfilm" form type for all images that contain information about the microfilm reel. These are images that were introduced to the collection when it was microfilmed, and are not part of the registers. See the wiki page for examples.

Cover page, Section header, etc



Use the “Cover page, Section header, etc” type for images that don’t contain any data, but might be interesting to look at because they provide some type of context for the image set. For instance, historical notes, affidavits, and so forth.

Image with no data



Use the “Image with no data” type for images that don’t contain any data or any useful context that might be interesting for someone to look at. For instance, an image containing only the blank background or an image with a microfilm target on it.
