|View Sample Image|
About this project This collection consists of tax lists from the State of Pennsylvania in 1798. The lists contain names of renters and landlords, land valuations, taxes levied, and lists of property sold or transferred. The project difficulty level is set at Easy as the records are mostly legible and there are few fields to be keyed.

This collection of tax lists, interspersed with various other lists, contains names and locations. There are usually two columns of names on the lists, sometimes called Occupier and Owner or Warrantor and Purchaser, for example. Only key names of occupiers, owners, possessors, purchasers, etc. Do not key names of neighbors or adjoining proprietors.
Each name should be keyed as a unique record; however, if a name appears more than once on the same image, key it only once. For example, an owner's name may appear twice if he rents to several families or owns several properties. Names may also appear inversed on the same image. For example, "Peter Brown" and "Brown, Peter." Key only once.
As there are usually two columns of names on an image, key the first column of names completely then go to the second column and key those names completely.
If a business name appears in either column of names, key the entire business name in the given name field.
Project-specific sample images and form field help:
Choose a sample image from below to see the corresponding form field examples.
This form type is for all images from which names and location will be keyed.
Key the locality found at the top of the image at the beginning of the list of names or in the header information of the list. A location will normally be found only on the first image of a tax list and may not be found on every image. The locality for this field can be a township, ward, district, or division. Do not key a county for this field. If there are multiple townships, add a section for each one.
Key any titles before the given name, such as "Dr", "Rev", "Mr" or "Mrs". If you see "widow of John Smith," key "widow of" into the prefix field and "John Smith" into the given and surname fields.
Key the given name. If the same complete name (given and surname, suffix) appears more than once on an image, key only once. If a business name appears in either column of names, key the entire business name in the given name field.
Key the surname. If the same complete name (given and surname, suffix) appears more than once on an image, key only once. If a business name appears in either column of names, key the entire business name in the given name field. If Est or Estate appears, disregard and only key the name.
Key all titles, such as "Jr" or "III", following the surname.
