About this project
This series contains descriptive lists of colored volunteers enlisted in the Army under General Order 135, Headquarters of the Department of the Missouri, dated November 14, 1863. They give the name, age, color of eyes, hair, complexion, height, place of birth, occupation, date of enlistment, by whom and for what period, and remarks. If a soldier was a former slave, his owner's name is entered. Signed certifications of the examining surgeon and the recruiting officer are included.

Enlistment Year
Key the year of enlistment and copy down the information to each soldier on the page. This information is found at the very top of the 'Enlisted-When' column as the first entry. If there is no year, leave the field blank.

Key the Surname of each person on the page using the dictionary provided for assistance. If the surname does not appear in the dictionary then key the surname as seen.

Key any titles before the Given name, such as "Dr", "Rev", "Mr" or "Mrs", using a dictionary if provided for assistance. If a prefix does not appear in a dictionary then key the prefix as seen.

Key the first name or initial and any middle names of each person in a list of names using the dictionary provided for assistance. If a name does not appear in the dictionary then key the name as seen.

Key all titles, such as "Jr" or "III", following the surname of the primary person to whom the record applies using a dictionary if provided for assistance. If a suffix does not appear in a dictionary then key the suffix as seen.

Birth Place
Key the Birth Place for each person on the image. This information can be found in the 'Where Born - Town, County, or Province' column AND 'Where Born - State, Empire, or Kingdom' column. Separate the values in each column by a comma (ex. Russell, Kentucky or County Claire, Ireland).

Age at Enlistment
Key the age at the time the record was recorded, using the dictionary provided. Valid ages include numeric digits between "0" and "120" and fractions between "1/12" and "11/12". If an age includes years, months, and/or days key only the years. For example, if an age appears as 10 years, 7 months, key age as "10" If an age appears in months, such as 10 months, key age as a fraction: "10/12" If an Age includes years plus a fraction, such as 3 3/12, key only the year: "3." If the age is less than one month, key "0."
