Project Instruction
For this project we will be keying name, rank, service date, and service place information. When keying dates, if multiple dates are found on the image, key the earliest date.
Key the earliest date on the image. If it is only a month and year, then key the DAY as [Blank]. Key 4 digits for years: If only the last 2 digits of the year are shown (e.g. "46"), assume the century and key "1846". If the year is shown as "184_" then do not key this date, but find another more complete year on the image. If no other date is found, then key the year as [Blank]. Do not key partial years and do not assume the last digit when it is missing.
If location is called for (Muster-In and Muster-Out only), key the location associated with the date you key. If that date has no location, key the earliest location you can identify.
It will be very helpful for this project to view the image samples found on the wiki to understand what forms we are keying.
Project-specific sample images and form field help:
Choose a sample image from below to see the corresponding form field examples.
Muster Card

Additional Sample Images
Choose the Muster Card form type for images containing a soldiers name, military unit, and the title "...Muster-in Roll," "...Muster Roll," "...Muster-out Roll," or "Appears on Returns as follows" near the top of the image.
Service Place
Key the Service Place from Muster Cards with the titles "Muster-in Roll" or "Muster-out Roll." The Service Place normally appears in the center of the card following the lines "Company Muster-in Roll of the Organization named above. Roll dated..." or "Appears on Co. Muster-out Roll dated..." Key the location that goes with the date that is keyed. Separate cities and states with a comma.
Do NOT key service place unless it is a Muster-In or Muster-Out card.
Service Month
Key the Service Month using the provided dictionary. Key from the earliest date found on the card.
Service Day
Key the Service Day. Key from the earliest date found on the card.

Keying Samples
Cover page, Section header, etc.
Use the “Cover page, Section header, etc” type for images that don’t contain any data, but might be interesting to look at because they provide some type of context for the image set. For instance, historical notes, affidavits, and so forth.
Additional Sample Images for Cover Page
Image with no data
Use the “Image with no data” type for images that don’t contain any data or any useful context that might be interesting for someone to look at. For instance, an image containing only the blank background or an image with a microfilm target on it.
