Extra Keying Helps
Common Keying Errors Found by Reviewers
After having reviewed nearly 2500 records from this project, the most common error I'm finding is a failure of the keyer to use the most recent date from a list of multiple Military Dates. This is especially true on the images that have a Date of Rank included with the person's name. In many cases, the DOR is not the most recent date, but is the date most frequently keyed. The individual may have been transferred, reassigned, or discharged, creating multiple dates more recent than the DOR.
From the project instructions... "Military dates include, but are not limited to, enlistment dates, service dates, dates of rank, and retirement dates. When multiple dates appear for an individual key from the latest date."

I have an image that lists 4 different individuals twice, they are all listed first as Generals, with DOR. Later they are listed as Colonels, with earlier DOR. I would assume, as in other projects, that we only key them once and use the later date of promotion to General. Just want to make sure before continuing to key. Thanks
- A: I would list them all with the different DOR's. -- Wiedwoman 03:38, 4 July 2013 (UTC)
Q: Should "Ret" be keyed as a Suffix when it appears following a name?
- A: no -- Wiedwoman 14:06, 6 July 2013 (UTC)
I have a page titled "Officer of the Day." From what I can determine it appears that the only information to be keyed is the surname and given name. I want to make sure this is the case before I do this and then find out there was something else to be entered. I checked all of the samples on the project page and cannot find a page like this. It appears that in addition to the name, there is a rank and unit and then an address.
- A: The only fields to key are name, rank date, date of birth and place of birth. If only the name is shown, that would be the only fields to key. -- Wiedwoman 01:22, 9 July 2013 (UTC)
Q: The project guidelines say "Choose the "Military Register" form type when the image contains names to key. Some images will have place locations named after people. If an image only contains place locations named after people it should not be keyed and marked as "Cover page, Section header, etc."" It is a little confusing...does that mean that if the page contains 100 or so entries such as below that we would mark it as a cover page or key in just the name? or that if the page only has the person's name followed by a place location we would mark it as a cover page (the instruction make it sound like the place location might be the actual name of a person rather than a place!):
Name, organization, and address ____________________________________________________ Rigdon, Jonathan M., capt. M.C., Ft. Sam Houson, Tex
I realize others have asked variations of this question but I just want to be sure.
- A: In your example, the form type is still "Military Register". Key the name of the person only, i.e. "Rigdon, Jonathan M.". Do not key "Sam Houston", as that is part of the name of a place. --Mitchhollander 10:43, 17 July 2013 (UTC)
