Extra Keying Helps

Common Keying Errors Found by Reviewers

Common Mistakes

  • Not filling out the whole card. Especially only keying the name and nothing else.
  • Marking non-standard cards as "cover page" or "no data". If it has a name, it is to be keyed. A number of cards have birth dates after 1946, those are also keyed.
This card does have data: Name, Birth year, Post-War Address
    • Formatting is variable, it is necessary to check the whole card for information.
  • confusing occupations and place names. Something of a challenge for a non speaker, however it can be done, there are resources!
  • Not keying as seen
  • Inferring the surname of the parent based on the child's suname.
  • Keying only part of the information: ie keying city but not street.
  • Omitting diacriticals, or using the diacriticals not present in Polish. The following are used: ą ę ćńśóź ż ł, no grave accents, no diacriticals on any other letter. (With the exception of a very few foreign names. )
  • Over-reliance on the suggestion lists. They are not complete, and are missing many diacritical marks.
  • handwriting
  • ZSSR /ZSRR Both mean USSR, and are both commonly used. Pay careful attention to which abbreviation is actually written.

It should be noted that overall quality has been steadily improving.
