Q: I have a form here that appears to be part of a crew list (page 6, continuing with more information for the crew members on page 7 of it, to be exact). It has no date at the top of it, nor does it have a birth year column. Many of the crew member's first names are abbreviated as well. Hi there, I'd like to support what Kathy says above. I have now done quite a few of these and would guess that well over 50% of crew members were born in Ireland or Northern Ireland, but there are very few Irish localities on the dropdown. I have made a list/ table in "Word" of about 50 of the most common localities I have encountered in Ireland, Northern Ireland and a few in Scotland and will be happy to email them to you if you let me know which email address?

Common Keying Errors Found by Reviewers


Entering the name of the "Skipper" from the crew list signatures. The instructions clearly state: "All names should be keyed from these registers except for ship masters" - Masters are also known as Captain or Skipper.

A: Birthplaces should be keyed as seen so if it is has an apostrophe L'pool", key it as that.

A: Do not assume the nationality unless it is definitely written on the record. For example, do not assume the nationality is British if they were born in Liverpool.

Q: I have a document 'Release at Termination of Voyage' which lists the signatures of crew (no dobs etc) please could you let me know if this would be classified as a crew list?

Since LPool shows up so frequently, could you add it to the dictionary, please?

On the Crew Lists pages that have age and Birthplace, normally there is no stamped date. I have the same questions as Len does above about what date should be used or should be we leave it coded as blank. I have found it very helpful after entering all of the crew members, ages, and birthdates to scroll to the right side where the crew members have signed their names again under the Release column. Many times, there is a better understanding of what was written and / or the entire name is on the right side but only an initial is on the left side.

Also, I think that it would be helpful to know when we are entering things incorrectly or skipping records or miscoding record types? If we are not made aware of what we are doing wrong, then we will consistently make the same errors. Is there anyway that we can find out what is being done incorrectly to improve the process for everyone?

Yes please, I want the same questions answered as the above posters. Also, there's a lot of places that need adding to the list of birthplaces: Arbroath, Glasgow, Belfast, Cork, Wexford, Hamburg, come up on many pages. AND if we have to key as we see - should Lpool be added to the list of birthplaces. Thanks Kathy

Hi there, I'd like to support what Kathy says above. I have now done quite a few of these and would guess that well over 50% of crew members were born in Ireland or Northern Ireland, but there are very few Irish localities on the dropdown. I have made a list/ table in "Word" of about 50 of the most common localities I have encountered in Ireland, Northern Ireland and a few in Scotland and will be happy to email them to you if you let me know which email address?
