Extra Keying Helps

Common Keying Errors Found by Reviewers

I'm finding some people are omitting Location of School - I guess because we do not usually key a street address in other Projects. Also there is no need to put the hyphens in eg High-street is actually High Street. This is just a way it was printed then(I think these days now only found in some legal documents).

I disagree with the above - there is nothing in the instructions to say that we should leave out the hyphens, and the general keying standards state that "When keying place names, all unique characters should also be preserved as they appear on the image, including less common forms of punctuation, like a colon ( : ), semi-colon ( ; ), slash ( / ), etc." --Katerimmer (talk) 07:28, 26 November 2016 (MST)

Q1 Are 'Miss' and 'Rev' not counted as [pre]fixes? They do not appear in the field's dictionary.
A1. Yes they are - they just seem to have been omitted from the dictionary for this Project

Q2 Should we key 'Mrs.' as it appears in the field help, or 'Mrs' as in the field's dictionary?

A2. I always key 'Mrs' anyway, I don't include full stops - it doesn't really matter as any full stops (eg after name initials) get stripped out in processing later.

Q3 Will there be another project to key the names of the children etc. in the fascinating commission's report? Seems a shame not to. There is info on age, sometimes family members included.

A3. Don't know - this is down to what the Project people want. The information will still be viewable later anyway to Researchers.

Q4 Updates are not coming through on email. Haven't been for some time. Is this because I'm in the UK?

Thanks. Chris. THANK YOU FOR THE HELP! Chris

Q5 Where in the Surname it states e.g John Mangan or Mannin. I have been entering two entries, on for Mangan and one for Mannin. Is this correct or how should they be entered?
A: You should just key one record, for Mangan, and ignore Mannin as there is no alias field on this project. --Katerimmer (talk) 07:25, 26 November 2016 (MST)

A4. Do you mean the "Watch" notifications for the Project and Discussion pages? Several of us have reported this previously but doesn't seem to have been rectified. I don't think it matters which country you are in!

We are working on this. Just talked to the developers last week and need to follow up on progress.Annafechter (talk) 07:18, 23 November 2016 (MST)
