Common Keying Errors Found by Reviewers
Most common errors that I've found: missing off the record of the master at the top of the crew list (see Q&A section) and missing/wrong date for 'registry'. Both down to lack of clarity in the original keying instructions. Plus the inevitable problems of interpretation of unclear crew signatures. --Jhowes01 07:21, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

Q: Should we keep archaic spellings of towns - eg. Should Newfolland be keyed as Newfoundland? A - You should key as seen - even if the spelling is archaic!
Edit: Thanks, what I thought. Whoever's arbitrating that batch will have fun - everyone's born in different towns in Newfoundland, each spelt a hundred different ways, and Newfoundland is also entirely inconsistently spelt!
Q: Are we keying the information from the "Ships Log" or is it to be a cover page? If keying do we list information under each unique date on its own tab and use the date for each entry as the registry date? If keying is it also safe to assume that the ship master and mate that sign each enrty are not to be keyed? Backusd3 12:50, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
Q: I am finding that only the registry year is given. No day or month is listed. So do we key the day and month as [Blank] or leave empty?
A - See the main wiki page, where it explains that the 'registry' date boxes are actually to be completed from elsewhere on the form (not the registry dates boxes!): >>"The date of registry may be found at the top or bottom of the cover page. Key the date that appears after words such as "Received at" and followed by "by [Name] Shipping Master" or "Signed by [Name] Master, on the...[Date]."<<
Master on Crew Lists
Q: Query on Crew lists Not keying ship masters - does that mean 'Shipping Master' or Master - the latter presumably usually the first person on each crew listing? I presume the first of those as I can't see the point of not keying the crew's Master.
A: We are not keying the Ship Master from the header of the record - we are keying their name if listed along with the crew.

Q: There are pages called "List of Crew and Report of Conduct". Looks like it is basically a report card of their service. Are we keying these pages? A - Yes
Q: If the page is pre-printed, but no written/additional information on it, is this classed as no data or cover page?
Suggestion: On a number of records there is an X or + between Given Name and Surname. I assume this is as in "Make your mark here". Perhaps there should be a note for anyone who comes across one in isolation not to key it as a second initial.
Q: Could we please have Lyme added to the list of Ports and Birthplaces too? Thanks!!!
Q: If the same person (same name, age and birthplace) is listed more than once on a list, do we enter it each time or only once?
Q: Should we extract names from pages with descriptions of incidents ("John Smith deserted", "Peter Brown drunk and incapable" etc.) or just mark these as cover pages?
Q: Any chance of answers to some of these questions, please? If the project is already 26% complete, we must be making lots of error if there are still so many queries.
