Portsmouth is a town in Rhode Island. It was formed in 1638 from the following county/ies: original. Portsmouth began keeping land records in 1636 and probate records in 1636. Court records can be found in Newport. For more information, contact the town at 2200 E. Main Rd., P.O. Box 155, Portsmouth 02871. Pocasset proprietors’ records are in manuscript form at New Bedford, Massachusetts Public Library.
