County seats in Montana are the location of the county clerk and recorder (vital records and deeds) and the clerk of the district court (probate and court records). The latter includes civil and criminal files and naturalizations. The Montana Association of Counties website has links to each county with updated contact information.

Starting dates of records and dates for the formation of counties were taken from Dennis Lee Richards’ work (see Background Sources for Montana).
