Ships’ passenger lists for the Port of Baltimore (1891–1948; earlier lists are in Washington, D.C.) and indexes to passenger lists for 1820 to 1952 are at the National Archives—Mid-Atlantic Region and the Maryland Historical Society. The index (1820–1909) is also available at the Baltimore City Archives. For the early period, see Michael H. Tepper, ed., Passenger Arrivals at the Port of Baltimore, 1820–1834, transcribed by Elizabeth P. Bentley (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1982). Harry Wright Newman’s To Maryland from Overseas (1982; reprint, Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 2002) lists some Jacobite rebels who were sold into service in Maryland. For the colonial period, see also Peter Wilson Coldham, The King’s Passengers to Maryland and Virginia (Westminster, Md.: Family Line Publications, 1997).
