The Hungarian alphabet consists of 40 letters and is an extension of the Roman alphabet.

There are two alphabets that are sometimes referred to, the smaller and greater Hungarian alphabets.

The greater alphabet contains the letters Q, W, X and Y which are only found in foreign words.

However, the letters W and Y do occur in some Hungarian aristocratic surnames.

There are some archaic letters that occur in family names:

  • aa, aá
  • ch, ts
  • eö, ew
  • cz
  • oo, oó
  • th
  • y
  • w
