This naturalization document was evidently penned by a clerk who spelled the subject’s name “Homer Hayes.” Note that the subject (who probably signed the document himself), spelled his own name “Homme Heijes.” The disparity in the spelling of both the first name and the surname on the same paper clearly illustrates one reason that it is often impossible to locate individuals in indexes.
