While adoption records have been sealed off from public view in almost every state, that was not always the case. This court document is that of child Bertha Hergt, adopted by William and Bertha Zander in 1875. Note the initial misspelling of the name that was probably corrected after the document was recorded. This example points to the importance of considering alternative spellings when records are not found where they were expected to be.
