Work Details

New York:
Included in the database are all of the soldiers of New York with the exception of some of the State Militia and National Guard units. These units were not included in the 43 volume State Adjutant-General's reports. However, the commissioned officers were included in the 6 volume work by Frederick Phisterer and are available in the database.

Albert Ledoux of Emmittsburg, MD, Mark Terry of Bothell, WA, and Wendy and Kama Ingleston and the good people at Crown Point Telephone Company in New York have been most gracious to photocopy a number of volumes for us.

Iowa:
Regiments completed: 1st - 39th Infantry Linda Suarez of Pleasant Hill, CA has most kindly provided us with the micofiche of volumes 4 & 5 (32nd - 50th Infantry, Cavalry and Artillery)

Kansas:
Regiments completed:
Cavalry: 2nd, 5th, 6th, 7th, 9th, 11th and 14th
Infantry: 1st, 2nd, 8th, 10th, 12th and 13th

Indiana:
Jim Joplin of Springfield, MO has lent to us 4 of the 8 volumes of the Indiana rosters.
Regiments completed:
Cavalry: 4th
Infantry: 6th - 11th (3 mos), 60th - 82nd, 102nd - 115th

Virginia:
Regiments completed:
Cavalry: 21st
Infantry: 3rd, 4th, 8th, 9th, 11th, 13th, 15th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 26th, 28th, 29th
33rd, 36th - 42nd, 44th - 46th, 51st, 57th, 60th

North Carolina:
Completed: All Cavalry, All Artillery and 1st - 61st Infantry
This includes all the published records. The remaining data will need to be transcribed from microfilm
.

Louisiana:
The three volume set is arranged alphabetical for the whole state and not organized by regiments.
Consequently, we will not have regiments completed until we have all of the soldiers of the state in the database.
The print font is very small and difficult to read, data-entry is very slow.

Wisconsin:
We are seeking to acquire a set of the rosters of Wisconsin. Any information to assist in locating these volumes would be most helpful. Please call Dick Dobbins at 800-244-3446.

Maine:
Unfortunately, Maine did not publish a final statewide roster of its soldiers. The data will be obtained from the various annual State Adjutant-General Reports issued during the war. This will be a very slow process which will not begin until we have completed the other statewide rosters.

Other States:
It is unfortunate that Delaware, West Virginia, Missouri and most Southern states did not publish a statewide roster of their soldiers. Consequently, we will be required to enter the data by transcription from microfilm,
a very difficult, slow and very expensive endeavor. Our strategy is to complete all the printed data before undertaking the arduous task of microfilm. Regrettably, this information will not be available for quite some time.

Regular US Army Personnel:
Data on regular army personnel is very sparse. Some states included in their statewide rosters information on men in the regular army for whom that state received credit. This information will be entered after we have completed the other statewide rosters. There is very limited information on other regular army personnel.

Data Availability Summary Chart
The following chart shows the data generally supplied by each state in their official War records. See the Bibliography section for more detail.

HDS's mission: Continue to do what we have spent over 30 people years doing -- build the Civil War database, fill the missing pieces of data from other sources, supplement what is already available, and provide our subscribers the most complete database of Civil War information.
